Thanks to its transparency, epoxy resin produces a shiny, crystal-like finish on wood, concrete, and metal. Besides enhancing the aesthetics of your project, this resinous coating also protects it against moisture, scratches, and chemical damage.

You should take the following factors into consideration when working with wood and resin:

  • Temperature Resistance and Surface Hardness:  The surface hardness and temperature resistance of epoxy resin are two of its most important characteristics. They both contribute to overall durability. The quality of the resin will determine how hard it will be and how resistant it will be to temperature changes. Ideally, it should be used on surfaces that are subject to a lot of stress, such as chopping boards and countertops.
  • Maximum Casting Thickness per Layer:  When you cast epoxy resin, the thickness can only remain a certain amount, often around two centimeters. Extending this limit may result in some parts hardening faster than others, which is unsightly.
  • Protection from UV rays / Resistance to Yellowing: Exposure to UV radiation can cause clear epoxy to yellow. You should choose a UV-resistant epoxy resin for outdoor projects.

How to Apply Epoxy to Wood

  1. Make sure the table surface is cleaned thoroughly. Resin adhesion will be hindered if there are oils, waxes, moisture, or greasy substances on the surface.
  2. A barrier should surround all sides of the table's surface so that the casting resin does not spill over. The best choice here is to use high-quality adhesive tape.
  3. Determine the amount of resin you will need based on the square footage of the surface area. You should account for a little extra in case anything goes wrong, so you have some wiggle room.
  4. As directed by the manufacturer, mix the epoxy resin and hardener together to form the mixture. Be careful not to stir too much to avoid forming air bubbles in the mixture.
  5. To ensure an even coating, pour the resin in a zig-zag pattern starting from the center of the wood surface.
  6. Be sure to work quickly while leveling the resin. The finished product should begin to have a gel consistency.
  7. A heat gun or torch burner can be used to remove air bubbles.
  8. For best results, wait at least 48 hours for the resin to cure.
